In-game purchases, game by game

Half the list is free to start and paid for through its shop; the other half sells expansions or nothing at all. This is what each one sells, and how the labels on the box describe it.

The two labels to look for

PEGI adds an In-game purchases descriptor to any game that sells paid digital extras, from expansions to cosmetics. Since April 2020 it has added a further notice when those purchases include paid random items, meaning you pay before you know exactly what you will get. For games submitted from June 2026, PEGI's new criteria rate paid random items at 16 by default.

UK industry commitments

In July 2023 the UK government chose an industry-led approach to paid random items rather than new law. The games industry body Ukie agreed principles that include technical controls so under-18s cannot buy them without a parent's or carer's knowledge or consent, and disclosure of the chances before purchase. They are voluntary, and the government's evaluation had not been published as of September 2026.

Keeping spending in check

Every platform lets a parent approve or cap spending, and a £0 default for children is common. Our play sensibly page lists the settings for PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, Steam and Epic.
