Games for an everyday laptop

Most laptops in UK homes have no separate graphics card. A handful of big games run happily on one anyway; the heavyweights do not, and streaming is the way round.

Integrated graphics share memory and power with the processor, so they are far weaker than even an entry-level graphics card. The games that play well here are the ones whose publishers set a very low minimum, and they will still run best at low settings, plugged in.

For the rest, a laptop is still a fine screen for cloud streaming, which does the heavy work on a remote server. Our cloud page shows which games can be streamed and what it involves.

Setting it up well

  • Plug in and switch Windows to its best performance power mode before playing.
  • Start on the lowest preset and add settings back one at a time.
  • Two memory sticks (dual channel) make a big difference to integrated graphics.
